UGA’s Community and School Garden Coordinator, Becky Griffin, will discuss “Our Native Pollinators” in a presentation hosted by the Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Association on April 20, 2020

When Monarch butterflies begin arriving in Georgia as part of their annual migration, University of Georgia (UGA) Extension’s Becky Griffin is one of the first to ring the bell. Her passion for and knowledge of pollinators has made her one of the best known names in UGA Extension’s outreach efforts across the state and on April 20, Becky will share her expertise in a presentation titled “Our Native Pollinators”. The presentation will explore some of Georgia’s native beneficial insects and offer tips for creating supportive habitat. Becky encourages participants to “bring your questions and be prepared to be amazed by what is in our gardens!”

In her role as the Community and School Garden Coordinator for UGA Extension’s Urban Ag Center, Becky travels the state working with county Extension agents to organize school garden teacher training. She assists schools with STE(A)M goals, and creates resources for starting and sustaining successful community and school gardens and increasing beneficial insect habitat. Becky is also a Pollinator Health Associate and as a Georgia Certified Beekeeper, she believes in emphasizing the ecosystem of the garden. Becky frequently teaches workshops on beneficial entomology and integrated pest management, and her name is synonymous with the Great Georgia Pollinator Census which Becky coordinates and promotes. Thanks to Becky’s vision, more than 4,000 Georgians in 133 counties participated in the nation’s first statewide pollinator census last August, logging more than 133,963 insect interactions and providing a snapshot of the status of pollinators in Georgia for ongoing research.

So if you’re interested in beneficial pollinators, curious about creating a habitat in a corner of your yard, school or community garden, or just want to meet a dynamo who can probably answer anything you ever wanted to know about butterflies, bees and wasps, please join the Gwinnett Master Gardener’s Association for this exciting presentation.

GCMGA meets on the third Monday of each month at The Bethesda Senior Center, 225 Bethesda Church Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30044. The event is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to bring a covered dish to share for a potluck dinner at 6:30pm or just arrive in time for the program which begins promptly at 7pm.
