Scott McMahon, Manager of International Plant Exploration at the Atlanta Botanical Garden will present “Plant Exploration with a Purpose” hosted by Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Association

Traveling the world to collect plants for a world-class botanical garden sounds like a dream to most gardeners, but for Scott McMahon, it’s a daily reality. In his position as the Manager of International Plant Exploration at the Atlanta Botanical Garden (ABG), Scott has made nearly 30 overseas trips to scout and collect plants for ABG, traveling to China, Vietnam, India, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Bhutan and Mexico. On January 20, 2020, Scott will share his experiences in “Plants with a Purpose”, a presentation that will highlight his extraordinary career.

A native of Decatur, Georgia, Scott is perhaps best known to gardeners for his retail nursery called Garden*Hood, which he opened in the fall of 2009 in downtown Atlanta. Between 2009 and 2016, Garden*Hood won multiple local awards including the “Best of the Big A” in the AJC and Creative Loafing’s “Best Garden shop”.

Scott has since sold much of his ownership in Garden*Hood in order to accept a full time position with ABG. Today, he oversees plant collection and evaluation at ABG as well as the creation of a visiting scholar program to promote the exchange of knowledge and plants with other botanical institutions around the world. This presentation is open to the public at no cost, and will undoubtedly prove that sometimes, dreams do come true.

GCMGA meets on the third Monday of each month at The Bethesda Senior Center, 225 Bethesda Church Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30044. The event is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to join us for lunch at 11:30am – the program will begin promptly at noon.
