Dr. John M. Ruter is the Allan M. Armitage Endowed Professor of Horticulture at The University of Georgia and serves as Director of the Trial Garden at UGA. Prior to his current position Dr. Ruter served as the nursery crop research and extension specialist for UGA on the Tifton Campus. Dr. Ruter’s research focuses on the breeding and release of herbaceous and woody ornamental cultivars, as well as the development of Camellia oleiferaas a new oil seed crop for the United States. Herbaceous genera that Dr. Ruter works with include: Abutilon, Agapanthus, Heliopsis, Hibiscus, Hosta, Kniphofia, Pavonia, Stokesia,and Thermopsis. Dr. Ruter’s program has released over 20 cultivars and over 120 accessions are out for evaluation with companies such as Bailey Nurseries, Ball Horticulture, Concept Plants, Darwin Perennials, Monrovia Growers, Spring Meadow, and Star Roses and Plants. Dr. Ruter also works on exclusive breeding/trialing projects for several companies. He teaches two classes in herbaceous plant identification and one course each on environmental issues in horticulture and ornamental plant breeding. He is the author/co-author of four books and over 500 scientific and popular publications.
