September 10th Meeting topics

·       Nominating Committee for 2025-2027-Gena Spears will lead the nominating committee for a slate of officers to be elected at the February 2025 meeting. The term is two years, beginning in March 2025 and ending in February 2027. Gena needs 3 volunteers to join the committee. We’re also asking all members to consider volunteering for an officer position. Gena and the committee will be in touch with each member to discuss the opportunities. Attached is an excerpt from the by-laws describing the officers’ responsibilities and nominating committee responsibilities.

·       Hospitality Committee-Gena Spears has graciously agreed to chair the Hospitality Committee. We’re asking all members to volunteer as a host for a future meeting. (bring your phone/calendar so you can sign up at the September meeting) We need two hosts per meeting. See attached document for more information.

·       Cottage Rental Committee-We have asked several times for members to volunteer for the Cottage Rental Committee. Most importantly we need a committee chair and co-chair to lead the committee. Please see the attached document for details. Training will be provided, and backup will also be available as needed. Currently Kathy Sumner is a one-person committee for cottage rentals. Please ask questions and consider stepping up for this important role.

·       Name tags will be distributed at the meeting. Members will keep their name tag and be responsible for bringing it to each meeting. You may also choose to keep your name tag in the top drawer of the chest in the dining room if you prefer not to take it home.

Great Southeast Pollinator Census

We hope everyone counted pollinators at their own home or favorite garden! Please remember to submit your counts to the Great Southeast Pollinator Census. Follow the instructions at https://gsepc.org/  It’s quick and easy to do!

On Friday, August 23rd, we assisted approximately 90 second graders and their teachers at Stripling Elementary School with the Pollinator Count. They were very excited to participate in the census.  The

students were attentive in looking for pollinators and serious about recording their counts. Of course, it was not possible to keep them focused on one plant for counting. But it was a fun and educational experience for them and us!

Several members volunteered on Saturday, August 24th at Discovery Garden Park to assist visitors with the pollinator counts. We provided count sheets and instructions. The kids had fun with the butterfly and bee costumes. About six children and six adults participated. It’s encouraging to see how interested and curious children are when they have an opportunity to participate in a nature activity.
