The Pollinator Partnership leads the efforts for National Pollinator Week each year.  Their website has several ideas on how to recognize this week.

In Georgia we are asking our citizens to celebrate by learning just one new pollinator.  Just one.  Maybe you have always wanted to learn the name of the interesting butterfly that you find on your blue mist plant?  Maybe you want to overcome any fears of wasps by learning about their roles as pollinators?   Maybe you want to become a more vocal advocate of native bees so you want to learn more leafcutter bees?

Challenge yourself to learn the scientific name of your insect.  Don’t worry too much about species level, sometimes that is hard to determine without putting a specimen under a microscope.

There are many resources to assist you.  The Bees in Your Backyard is a book that I use almost daily as I continue building my knowledge of native bees.  Georgia Wildlife has created a free Georgia butterfly ID brochure that features adult butterflies as well as their caterpillar form.  The Bees of Georgia website is a valuable resource for all Georgians. Your local UGA Extension agent will be helpful for identification.  Join us on Facebook and Instagram as we all learn together.

Are you up for the challenge?  Will you join us?
