Margaret Molyson addresses ways to reduce yard maintenance costs and support bird conservation efforts in her presentation on Monday, October 21, 2019

While birds seem to be just about everywhere, a recently released study by Cornell Lab of Ornithology reported there are nearly three billion fewer birds than in 1970—in other words, more than 1 in 4 birds have disappeared from our U.S. landscape in a mere half century. In her October 21st presentation, Margaret Molyson addresses how increasing native plant areas in our home lawns not only reduces the time and money spent on yard maintenance, but more importantly, it supports the dwindling native bird population by giving them food for their young and nesting habitat.

Margaret Molyson is a native of New Orleans and a retired high school biology teacher. She completed the Master Gardener training in 2016 and is enjoying participating in the program. She and her husband have twin daughters and moved to Lilburn in 2017 in anticipation of the birth of their first grandchild, Mia, in February, 2018. Their home is located on the Yellow River and having lived here only a year and a half the yard is a “work in progress”. They are striving to restore the native understory plants while removing invasive plants. In addition to native plants Margaret’s gardening interests includes growing ferns from spores. This year Mrs. Molyson chaired the “dig” committee for the Gwinnett Master Gardeners Spring Plant Sale.

GCMGA meets on the third Monday of each month at The Bethesda Senior Center, 225 Bethesda Church Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30044. The event is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to bring a covered dish to share for a potluck dinner at 6:30pm or just arrive in time for the program which begins promptly at 7pm.
